The Ethiopian government confirmed its determination to achieve self-sufficiency in food production to challenge the stereotypical representation of Africa as a continent dependent on aid. In a statement released today by the prime minister's press office, it is said that over the past six years, bold policies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity have been implemented not only to ensure food security but also for ensuring long-term self-sufficiency.
The government expressed regret regarding some external attempts to undermine national development and indicated the need to strengthen development, especially in agriculture. It emphasized that the determination of various ministries, alongside the hard work of Ethiopian farmers who maintain their livelihoods, shows that food security is not only a political goal but also an indispensable necessity for the nation and the people.
It was noted that Ethiopia has made the production of wheat the cornerstone of its path to self-sufficiency, significantly increasing yields and creating a substantial surplus due to the expansion of irrigated land, the use of improved seeds, and the application of modern agricultural technologies.
The government underlined that such a strategic focus of transforming Ethiopia from a wheat-importing country to a self-sufficient producer reflects the success of its agricultural policies, programs, and initiatives. The statement concluded by calling on the international community to support Ethiopia’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, emphasizing that this success significantly positively impacts the stability and development of the region.
